Rotary’s Response to the 1918 Flu Pandemic

An estimated 500 million people worldwide became infected. Many cities closed theaters and cinemas, and placed restrictions on public gatherings. Rotary clubs adjusted their activities while also helping the sick.

This is how Rotary responded to the influenza pandemic that began in 1918 and came in three waves, lasting more than a year.

Rotary at the Start of the United Nations

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.

During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter.

Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”

First Club in Philippines Opens Door to Rotary in Asia

In early 1919, Rotarian Roger Pinneo of Seattle, Washington, USA, traveled to the Philippines to try to organize a Rotary club in Manila. Leon J. Lambert, a Manila business leader helped Pinneo establish the club. Several months later, on 1 June 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila was chartered and became the first Rotary club in Asia.

The club would be the only one in the country for more than 12 years. Eventually, Manila club members organized Rotary clubs in the Philippine cities of Cebu (1932) and Iloilo (1933). Iloilo club members then started a club in Bacolod (1937), and Rotary continued to expand across the country.

History of Women in Rotary

Women are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.

The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

Young Inventor Eco-Friendly Bricks Come Full Circle

Every hero has an origin story. “I was 10 years old when the entire journey started,” explains Binish Desai. It began with a cartoon called Captain Planet, an animated TV series from the 1990s about an environmentalist with superpowers. Desai can still recite the show’s refrain: Captain Planet, he’s our hero / Gonna take pollution down to zero! “That tagline stuck in my mind,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help Captain Planet.”

Champions for Families Event Benefits RotaCare

Posted on Nov 29, 2015
On November 9th, friends and supporters gathered at The Westbury Manor to recognize a dedicated group of Long Island’s top advocates for healthy families. The Champions for Families event benefited RotaCare, a Uniondale-based free medical clinic offering primary care and medications to those in need. The “Class of 2015” advocates were an impressive group: Dr. Cornell C. Frank, Administrator & Dean of Business Affairs, CUNY and VSC and former President of Staten Island Rotary Club and Charter President of a Rotary E-Club,  Dr. Joseph Frey, RotaCare Board Director, PDG Dr. Eileen Gentilcore, Past President RotaCare/Emeritus Board, PDG Katherine Gibson, former President Locust Valley Rotary, Dr. Kathleen Lamaute, CNE Professor, Division of Nursing, Molloy College and President, RotaCare Board of Directors, John Lane, RotaCare Board Director, Prakash Pisipati, Founder & President, The New Protocol, Inc. Jennifer Poupis, Account Manager Procter & Gamble, Jane Schwartz, RotaCare Board Director, PDG George Solomon, General and Municipal Securities Principal / Division Manager, FSC Securities Corp. & RotaCare Board Director, Ronald Steimel, Executive Vice President / Chief Administrative Officer Mercy Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. Each of the honorees works tirelessly, sharing time and talent to better the lives of those in need on Long Island and promote healthy families.

With the goal of addressing the needs of the uninsured in Nassau County, Long Island, members of the Rotary Club of Mineola-Garden City launched Rotacare in 1992. Working with the representatives of the Interfaith Nutrition Network, volunteers from Rotary District 7250 (now District 7255) and community minded people, their idea took root. Grumman Aerospace provided RotaCare’s first funding grant. From the start, RotaCare has worked to make Long Island’s poorest families stronger and healthier by assisting with healthcare challenges. RotaCare President, Dr. Kathleen Lamaute said, “Champions for Families is an important event that recognizes leaders among us.  RotaCare is grateful to be the beneficiary of this event. These funds will enable us to continue our mission to facilitate health care for the most needy on Long Island.”

Staffed by a qualified, all volunteer staff, RotaCare is able to reduce cost through preventive care and the management of chronic disease. The numbers are impressive: on a yearly basis 100+ volunteers see 800 patients and offer 14,000 service hours and $4 million dollars worth of free services. RotaCare provides primary care to prevent complications that may require hospitalization and costlier care. This approach keeps patients out of the hospital, minimizes use of emergency rooms, and enhances medication and treatment compliance.

RotaCare patients have become increasingly marginalized. Through generous support, RotaCare has created a space where people in need can access health care in a setting that treats them with dignity and respect. This makes a big difference not only for RotaCare patients, but for the overall health of our communities as well.

For more information about RotaCare, or to volunteer, please log on to www.RotaCareNY.org or phone 516-539-9834.

Donations may be mailed to: RotaCare, 875 Jerusalem Avenue, Uniondale, NY 11556.

Helping people with disabilities make their own music

Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.
